Back in the Fall, Steven Soderbergh’s attempt to explore the world of an interactive narrative via an app was met with silence as the murder mystery “Mosaic” premiered in App stores to no fanfare.
The trouble was Soderbergh wasn’t exploring anything new, branching narratives have been done in other media before from books to art displays and, most frequently, in gaming circles with a notable example being PS4’s “Until Dawn”.
Expected to get much more traction though is the full linear narrative version he’s cut together for HBO with six episodes he directed entirely himself. Soderbergh shot a bunch of footage for “Mosaic” with this upcoming broadcast version containing much more than the app did and today HBO has released the trailer ahead of the show’s January 22nd premiere.
Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Jennifer Ferrin, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Devin Ratray, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb, Michael Cerveris and Maya Kazan star in the story in which popular children’s book author and illustrator Olivia Lake (Stone) sets her sights on a handsome, young newcomer in town, aspiring graphic artist Joel Hurley (Hedlund).
Encouraged by the doting and flirtatious Olivia, he accepts her offer for a place to stay and work, but the unexpected arrival of Joel’s girlfriend, Laura, sends Olivia into a jealous tailspin. Development is already underway on season two.
