The sudden departure of Charlie Hunnam over the weekend from the film adaptation of erotic novel season “Fifty Shades of Grey” has left a casting gap to fill… and fast.
Hunnam left the project just several weeks before it was slated to begin filming, so a replacement will have to be inserted quicker than the producers and director Sam Taylor-Johnson are likely comfortable with.
As of now, the studio is revisiting previous candidates it clicked with. The first back-up candidate, Garrett Hedlund, is out of the running due to his commitments to Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken”.
Two favourites at present are Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood,” “Battleship”) and Jamie Dornan (“The Fall,” “Once Upon a Time”), while both Theo James (“Divergent,” “Bedlam”) and Christian Cooke (“Magic City,” “Romeo and Juliet”) are also said to be getting another look over.
While this is going on, Oscar-nominated screenwriter Patrick Marber (“Closer,” “Notes on a Scandal”) has come onboard to give the script a polish and some extra character work. Marber previously worked with Taylor-Johnson on the short “Love You More”.
