Natascha McElhone, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy have all reportedly joined the TV series adaptation of the hit video game franchise “Halo” at Showtime.
The group join previously announced series lead Pablo Schreiber as the Master Chief and Yerin Ha as a new character named Kwan Ha. Production on the series, produced by 343 Industries and Amblin Television, will begin later this year in Budapest ahead of a Q1 2021 premiere.
McElhone (“Designated Survivor,” “Ronin”) will star as two key characters: Spartan supersoldier creator Dr. Catherine Halsey, and Cortana, the most advanced AI in human history and the key to the survival of the human race.
Woodbine (“Fargo,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) will play Soren-066, a privateer on civilization’s fringes whose fate will bring him into conflict with his former military masters and his old friend, the Master Chief. Azmi (“City of Joy”) will play Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence.
The other three are playing new character. Kalu (“Edge of Tomorrow”) is Spartan Vannak-134, a cybernetically augmented supersoldier conscripted at childhood and the Master Chief’s defacto deputy. Culzac (“The Witcher”) is Spartan Riz-028, a focused and deadly cybernetically enhanced killing machine. Kennedy (“Catastrophe”) is Spartan Kai-125, a courageous and curious supersoldier.
Nine episodes of the series have been ordered and Kyle Killen and Steve Kane will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, Toby Leslie, Scott Pennington, and Karen Richards will also executive produce along with series director Otto Bathurst.
Showtime President of Entertainment Gary Levine, speaking about the series at the TCA’s today, says violence wise the show will: “sort of belong in our PG-13 almost R universe of shows… hopefully we’ll satisfy the gamers and satisfy the Showtime drama watchers.” Showtime is also said to be respecting all the canon of the franchise, making sure not to violate anything big.
