John Singleton is in negotiations to direct a biopic about his former colleague and slain rapper Tupac Shakur for Morgan Creek and Universal Pictures reports Vulture.
Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) was previously setup with the project but had difficulty casting the role so he has moved on to “Hunter Killer”. Singleton was prepping the N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton” at New Line but is now taking on this film instead.
Stephen J. Rivele, Chris Wilkinson and Brian Tucker all worked on the script for the film. The late Shakur and Singleton became quite friendly during the filming of 1993’s “Poetic Justice”.
Singleton is coming off the Taylor Lautner thriller “Abduction” which was a critical and box-office fizzer.
