William Eubank (“The Signal”) has signed on to direct “Count,” a new take on Alexandre Dumas’ classic tale “The Count of Monte Cristo” for Warner Bros. Pictures and Safehouse Pictures. Joe Pokaski (“Underground”) penned the script for this version which will be set against the backdrop of a contemporary criminal underworld.
The original story follows a man, Edmond Dantes, who is betrayed and imprisoned for years. Upon escape and finding a treasure of incredible wealth, he returns as a gentleman of society to plan and take his revenge on the three men responsible.
The tale has been adapted for the screen countless times, the most recent lavish adaptation being the 2002 film starring Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce and a very young Henry Cavill. ABC’s TV series “Revenge” was also said to be loosely inspired by the tale.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell are attached to produce, no start date is yet set.
