If you were a kid in the 1980s and early 1990s and if you were into PC video games, one company you knew of was Sierra Entertainment. The video game publisher famous for its point-and-click adventures with a sense of humour.
The result were iconic game series and one-offs like “King’s Quest,” “Space Quest,” “Police Quest,” “Leisure Suit Larry,” “Quest for Glory,” “The Black Cauldron,” “Mixed-Up Mother Goose,” “Manhunter,” “EcoQuest,” “The Dagger of Amon Ra,” “Castle of Dr. Brain” and many more.
By the late 1990s gamers moved on to different genres and publishers and a buyout essentially scuttled the company. Even so, there’s still a lot of respect for the Sierra name which was absorbed into Activision back in 2008.
Now, the company label is being re-activated, with the first game to be a new chapter in the “King’s Quest” franchise which will be worked on by The Odd Gentlemen, the indie L.A. game company behind “The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom”. The game will be a “fully ‘reimagined’ take on the original series” according to Activision and is due out next year.
Ken Williams, one of the original founders of Sierra Online says: “We’re very proud of what we created all those years ago with Sierra Online, and today’s news about carrying Sierra forward as an indie-specific brand is very encouraging. We look forward to seeing Sierra’s independent spirit live on, and are especially excited to see what The Odd Gentlemen will do with King’s Quest.”
Sierra will essentially become Activision’s label for indie and mid-budget games, taking on the challenging smaller titles whilst appeasing shareholders who want the company to only focus on the big budget AAA titles. Sierra is expected to release its titles across Steam, Xbox Live and Playstation Network.
