Now here’s a team-up you might not have expected. Joe Eszterhas, the writer of such 1990s fare as “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” is teaming with “Son of God” and “The Bible” producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett for the faith-based feature “Guadalupe” at MGM and LightWorkers Media.
The ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe’ story deals with the visitation of the Virgin Mary in a small town in Mexico in the 16th century and the subsequent push by a humble man named Juan Diego to get a temple erected in her name.
The site is revered throughout the world as sacred, but especially in Latin American countries where the painted image has become a symbol of faith. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located in Mexico City, now has about 20 million visitors a year.
Once Hollywood’s highest-paid screenwriter who lived a wild lifestyle, he battled cancer and addiction before undergoing a Christian conversion fourteen years ago when his idea for this script came about.
He traveled to Mexico City to do research and to pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe to help him become a messenger for God. The end result is the spec script which Lightworkers just picked up.
