Ruth Negga, best known for her role as Raina in “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” alongside big screen roles in “12 Years a Slave” and “World War Z,” has become the first cast member to sign on for AMC’s TV series adaptation of the “Preacher” comics.
Negga is set to play the female lead Tulip in the show, the ex-girlfriend and one true love of the titular Texas preacher Jesse Custer. In the comic, Jesse merges with a heavenly creature that gives him the ability to make anyone do anything he commands.
Upon learning God has abandoned his post in heaven, he teams with Tulip and a vampire named Cassidy to find God. At last report “Marvel’s Agent Carter” actor Dominic Cooper was being eyed to play Jesse Custer, though no formal offer has been issued yet.
Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon created the popular comic which Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are directing the pilot and executive producing. Also set to executive produce are Sam Catlin, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Vivian Cannon, Ori Marmur, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter.
