Yesterday came the announcement that ABC had renewed “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” for a shortened sixth season. Now comes the announcement by ABC that the next installment of the series won’t go to air for at least another year – specifically not until Summer 2019.
That would put the next season premiere well after the release of the fourth “Avengers,” bypassing issues of continuity due to that film’s ending (the events of ‘Infinity War’ happen at the same time as those of the end of the fifth season of ‘SHIELD’). ABC president Channing Dungey tells TV Line the delay will be for the betterment of the show:
“What we’ve discovered is that we have a very loyal and passionate fan base for S.H.I.E.L.D. The show does incredibly well for us in delayed viewing. By putting it in the summer, we’re going to be able to super-serve the fan base that loves that show and hopefully give it an opportunity to continue on longer than we would if it was [scheduled] in-season.”
The season five finale of “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” is set to air this Friday, May 18th on ABC.
