“X-Men: Apocalypse” and “The Tree Of Life” actor Tye Sheridan has just scored the starring role in the Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation of Ernest Cline’s cult novel “Ready Player One” for Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and DreamWorks.
The story follows a teenager named Wade Watts (Sheridan) who becomes immersed in a virtual reality world known as Oasis which enables users to live out their dream lives. When the game’s creator suddenly dies, Wade enters an elaborate treasure hunt, where the winner will take control of the entire company.
The teenager soon finds himself up against corporate entities who will do anything to take over the company. Various 1980s pop culture references feature heavily in the work and are expected to be carried over to the film.
Zak Penn wrote the script, while Olivia Cooke and Ben Mendelsohn also star. Spielberg, Donald De Line, Dan Farah, and Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.
