Semi Live-Action “Sonic” Film Hits 2018

Back in 2014 came word that Sony Pictures Entertainment and SEGA SAMMY Group’s Marza Animation Planet were teaming up to develop “Sonic the Hedgehog,” a live-action and animation hybrid cinematic feature based on the iconic video game franchise.

Nothing much has been heard since, but SEGA CEO Hajime Satomi revealed to Worldfolio (via io9) this week that the project is still on the way and is being fast-tracked for a 2018 release.

The film aims to capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and will incorporate iconic characters from the franchise including the evil Dr. Eggman. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are penning this feature which is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.

The “Sonic” franchise has sold over 140 million games and the character previously headlined several animated series.
