Fox Searchlight has announced today that the company has acquired North American rights to Amma Asante’s true story “A United Kingdom” starring David Oyelowo (“Selma”) and Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl”).
The story follows the forbidden love of King Seretse Khama of Botswana (David Oyelowo) and Ruth Williams (Rosamund Pike), a white woman from London, which caused an international uproar when they decided to marry in the late 1940s just as apartheid was being introduced into South Africa. It was a decision that altered the course of African history.
The project has been getting a lot of buzz in the UK, but the distributor has set it for a February 17th 2017 U.S. release which means it’s out of the running for awards consideration.
Richard McCallum, Oyelowo, Brunson Green, Peter Heslop, Justin Moore-Lewy and Charlie Mason produced the film for Pathe, BBC Films, BFI and Ingenious Media.
