Warner Bros. Pictures is really getting into the mobster movie genre reports Deadline.
Firstly they’ve given the green light to “Gangster Squad”, the Ruben Fleischer-directed and Will Beall-scripted crime drama about charismatic 1940’s Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen.
Sean Penn is being formally offered the lead role of Cohen, while Ryan Gosling is getting the offer to play one of two cops leading a squad of elite officers assigned to bring him down.
The studio is also lining up “Cicero”, the Walon Green-penned story of Al Capone’s formative years. “Harry Potter” helmer David Yates has apparently expressed interest in the project.
