Scully, Cox Score Lead Roles In “Heathers”

Newcomers James Scully and Grace Victoria Cox have scored the lead roles of J.D. and Veronica in TV Land’s upcoming single-camera anthology series reboot of Daniel Waters’ pitch black 1988 comedy “Heathers”.

Christian Slater and Winona Ryder (pictured) took on the roles in the original film about the trials and tribulations of the couple dealing with the social order in high school – more specifically dealing with the three at the top in the form of three entitled rich girls all named Heather.

The series reinvention will keep the black comedy and set it in the present day but switches things around – these days what were the outcasts have now become high school royalty. Heather McNamara is a black lesbian; Heather Duke is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath; and Heather Chandler is super frumpy.

Veronica Sawyer will continue to take center stage and serve as the narrator of the potential series, and both the Veronica and J.D. characters are said to be very similar to their film counterparts. Production on the pilot is expected to begin this Fall with Leslye Headland (“Sleeping With Other People”) on board to direct.
