Kristen Scott Thomas has scored the key role of the jealous, obsessed housekeeper Mrs. Danvers in the new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s classic gothic novel “Rebecca” for Working Title Films and Netflix.
Armie Hammer will re-team with his “Free Fire” director Ben Wheatley on the project in which Lily James plays a young woman who has married a rich, handsome, cold and fascinating widower Max De Winter (Hammer) who lives at an imposing estate on the bleak English coast.
She soon learns she must live in the shadow of his domineering former wife, Rebecca, who died under mysterious circumstances several years earlier. She must also deal with Mrs. Danvers who will not accept her as the new mistress of the house.
The property was previously adapted for the big screen in 1940 by Alfred Hitchcock as his first American studio picture – scoring much acclaim and winning numerous awards including a Best Picture Oscar. Judith Anderson took on the role in that version.
Jane Goldman penned the script for the new take and filming begins next year.
