Paramount Pictures is developing a feature film about the romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and setting it up as a directing vehicle for Martin Scorsese says Deadline.
The studio has optioned Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s book “Furious Love” while the producers have a rights agreement with Burton’s estate, and a pledge of cooperation from his widow to make his library available.
Taylor made available many of the love letters Burton wrote to her over the years for the book which focuses on a torrid and tempestuous romance between the two stars after they fell hard for each other on the set of “Cleopatra” despite each being married to other partners at the time.
The filmmakers have also reached out to the estate of Taylor with the same hopes and a writer will be hired shortly. Scorsese, Julie Yorn, Gary Foster and Russ Krasnoff will produce.
