Sci-Fi Plans New “Alien Nation” Series

The Sci-Fi Channel is developing another spin-off series based on the 1988 film “Alien Nation” reports Variety.

The original film was set in 1991, when alien refugees had come to Earth three years before and were now attempting to integrate into Los Angeles.

The action followed the partnership between a veteran cop and his newly assigned alien detective partner trying to stop a businessman from selling a dangerous narcotic to the alien species.

The film spawned a TV spin-off the following year on Fox which lasted one season, several TV movies aired from 1994 to 1997, wrapping up the show’s storylines.

Tim Minear (“Angel,” “The X-Files,” “Firefly”) is penning the update for Fox 21. This new version is set in the Pacific Northwest of the 2020’s, two decades after the first alien ship crashed on Earth.

The ‘newcomers’ now number several million and live a segregated existence. The show will use a serial mythology as well as exploring racial and cultural assimilation issues much like the previous show.
