While “Grown Ups 2” beat “Pacific Rim” at the U.S. domestic box-office yesterday, both had decent opening days which should at least mildly alleviate some concerns.
“Grown Ups 2” came in first with $16.3 million on Friday, and early estimates have it grossing $42 million for the weekend. Those figures are just ahead of the first film which had a $14.4M opening day and $40.5M opening weekend.
“Pacific Rim” came in second with $14.6 million on Friday and is targeting a $37 million opening weekend.
“Despicable Me 2” wasn’t far behind in third place with $13.3 million for the Friday, and is expected to move ahead today with the kiddie bump to take the top spot for the weekend with $43 million.
With its expensive $180 million budget, “Pacific Rim” will rely heavily on foreign market coin. It’s expected to do big business in Asia, but may have a rougher time elsewhere.
In Australia, “Pacific Rim” opened in fourth place this weekend. This has caused quite a few to wonder why it has unexpectedly tanked in this specific market, though the terrible attempted “Aussie accents” of two of the characters probably didn’t help.
