Oscar nominee Sam Rockwell has signed a deal to voice the titular gorilla character in the film adaptation of Katherine Applegate’s Newbery Medal-winning 2011 novel “The One and Only Ivan” at Disney Pictures.
Thea Sharrock (“Me Before You”) helms and Mike White is penning the adaptation which Angelina Jolie will produce and provide the voice for one of the characters.
The story follows a silverback gorilla named Ivan (voiced by Rockwell) who lives in a cage in a shopping mall along with an elephant named Stella (voiced by Jolie) and a stray dog called Bob.
Ivan does not remember life before the mall, but when a baby elephant named Ruby (voiced by Brooklynn Prince) enters and Ivan finds himself taking care of her, he begins to rediscover his previous life and concocts a plan to take the baby elephant away from their abusive owner.
Ariana Greenblatt (TV’s “Stuck in the Middle”) will play the lead live-action character. Brigham Taylor will produce and the late Allison Shearmur will retain a producer credit on the movie.
