“Skyfall” and “American Beauty” director Sam Mendes has signed on to produce an adaptation of Jess Walter’s best-selling 2012 novel “Beautiful Ruins” for Fox 2000 with the project shaping up as a potential directing vehicle.
The story centers on an American actress who travels to Italy in 1962 during the production of “Cleopatra,” considered the most expensive flop in Hollywood history. The story spans decades and locations as her narrative intertwines with Elizabeth Taylor and her famed love affair with Richard Burton.
“Transparent” writing duo Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue will adapt the script. The project had previously been in development at Cross Creek Pictures with Todd Field attached to write and direct, but that version stalled.
Mendes recently signed on to direct and produce “The Voyeur’s Motel” through his Neal Street Prods.
