Sony Pictures and Original Films have landed the film rights to the popular 1990’s comic book series “Preacher” with Sam Mendes (“Jarhead,” “Revolutionary Road”) set to direct says The Hollywood Reporter.
Created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, the story followed a down-and-out Texas preacher possessed by Genesis, a supernatural entity conceived by the unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon.
Given immense powers, the preacher teamed with an old girlfriend and a hard-drinking Irish vampire and set out on a journey across America to find God — who apparently had abandoned his duties in heaven — and hold him accountable for his negligence.
The project was most recently setup as a Mark Steven Johnson-penned, Howard Deutch-directed pilot for a regular series on HBO but that project was put into turnaround. Before that a $25 million feature with James Marsden in the title role was planned.
Neal Moritz will produce the new version alongside Jason Netter.
