It looks like the “Star Wars” franchise has been in need of some script doctoring. Reports have sprung up today about re-writes being performed on both Gareth Edwards’ “Star Wars: Rogue One” and Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII” – albeit for different reasons.
First up, Latino Review has reportedly confirmed a report from back in October that writer/director Christopher McQuarrie (“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” “Jack Reacher”) was brought in last year to spend a few weeks doing a re-write on ‘Rogue One’.
Gary Whitta penned the original draft of the script which Chris Weitz subsequently re-wrote. However the site indicates the studio was still not fully happy with where the script was at and so was brought in McQuarrie to do a two-week polish on it – presumably after his “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” commitments were complete.
McQuarrie is used to being a script doctor, having done script work on both “Edge of Tomorrow” and an uncredited polish on “World War Z” in recent years. If true, it’s likely McQuarrie also won’t get a credit on the script here but that has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, Meet the Movie Press reports that production on Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII” has been pushed back a month to February, so Johnson can rewrite the script. The reason? Essentially some of the newer roles in the film, such as those actresses Bel Powley and Gina Rodriguez were up for, are being scaled back. This is being done so the beloved ‘Force Awakens’ characters like Rey, Finn, Poe, etc. get more screen time:
“Last week we mentioned Bel Powely and Gina Rodriguez. Now I heard Gina didn’t get it. Now I am told Episode VIII has been pushed about a month. Rian Johnson is going to do another rewrite, and I heard an Asian actress got the role Bel and Gina were up for. But I don’t know if the Bel Powely thing will work out. I said before there were two young female roles, now I actually heard that the rewrite will make these roles smaller. They want to get to know better the characters they already have. So the new rewrite is shrinking the new roles in order to spend more time with Rey, Poe and so on. “
The outlet wouldn’t reveal the identity of the Asian actress who supposedly won the role beyond saying she isn’t very well known. No actors for the film have been officially confirmed as yet.
