Oscar-winning “Chinatown” screenwriter Robert Towne has singed on to pen the script for the big-budget four-part miniseries epic “Pompeii’ says The Hollywood Reporter.
The big-budget epic is an adaptation of Robert Harris’ best-selling novel set in the final days of the ancient Roman city before Mount Vesuvius erupted, covering it volcanic ash for centuries.
The main character is a young aqueduct engineer who is racing against time to keep water flowing to the ancient cities on the Bay of Naples, unaware of the impending doom.
The project originally started out life as a feature which Roman Polanski was set to direct. The project has been reconceived as a mini-series, without Polanski’s involvement, and will be produced by Sony Pictures TV, Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free and Germany’s Tandem Communications.
