Robert Redford is in early talks to join the remake of the 1977 Disney family classic “Pete’s Dragon”. The new take will use live action combined with a CG dragon.
In the new version, Pete (Oakes Fegley) is a boy whose parents died in car crash. He has been subsequently raised by the dragon named Elliot in a forest now threatened by loggers.
Other characters include a forest ranger, along with a mill owner’s young daughter (Oona Laurence) and greedy brother. Redford will play a local who tells tall-tales involving dragons that no one believes.
David Lowery is helming the project which shoots in New Zealand this fall, not far from Redford’s current gig – filming “Truth” alongside Cate Blanchett in Australia. Jim Whitaker is producing.
