Earlier this year came the news that Paramount Pictures was moving forward with another chapter in “The Ring” franchise called “Rings”. This would feature an all new cast but be tied to the continuity of the 2002 film and its 2005 sequel.
Today, Bloody-Disgusting says the film is actually a prequel and will be set several years before the events in the 2002 film. Naomi Watts starred in the first as a woman trying to uncover the truth about a mysterious VHS video tape, one that anyone who watches it dies seven days later.
“Rings” will explore how the tape was created and delve into Samara’s origins. Casting is now underway and F. Javier Gutierrez (“Before the Fall”) will direct from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Jacob Aaron Estes and David Loucka.
