Richie Merritt, a complete newcomer from Baltimore without any credits or representation, has landed the title role opposite Matthew McConaughey in the biopic “White Boy Rick” at Studio 8.
Set in 1980s Detroit at the height of the crack epidemic, the story follows Richard Wershe Jr. (pictured above) who became an undercover informant at the age of 14 before becoming a major dealer right up until he was arrested at age 17.
McConaughey will play his father and the actor tested with dozens of potential hopefuls until landing on Merritt following a great chemistry read.
Bel Powley, Bruce Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rory Cochrane, Jonathan Majors, Y.G., Taylour Paige, and Piper Laurie also star. Yann Demange (“’71”) helms the film which Darren Aronofsky, Julie Yorn, John Lesher and Scott Franklin are producing. Filming aims to begin in the Spring.
