In an unexpected but intriguing bit of casting, “The Hobbit” and “Into the Storm” actor Richard Armitage has scored the key role of Francis Dolarhyde in the upcoming third season of NBC’s “Hannibal”.
Dolarhyde is also known as ‘The Tooth Fairy,’ the serial killer who serves as the main antagonist of Thomas Harris’ “Red Dragon” novel and the previous two film adaptations. Tom Noonan and Ralph Fiennes previously played the role in those films.
Armitage’s role is said to encompass six episodes of the new season. He joins not only the regular cast but Joe Anderson replacing Michael Pitt as the now disfigured Mason Verger, and Gillian Anderson being upgraded to series regular as Bedelia du Maurier.
The project also marks a return to television for Armitage who made his name on such British series as long-running spy drama “Spooks” (aka. “MI-5”), “North and South,” “Robin Hood,” and the original “Strike Back”.
“Hannibal” is expected to return to screens sometime in the second quarter of the year.
