A sixth film in the “Mission: Impossible” series has been in the works at Paramount Pictures even before the critical and commercial success of “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” last summer. In the wake of that hit, both director Christopher McQuarrie and breakout star Rebecca Ferguson were signed on to join Cruise again in the follow-up.
But what about the others? Simon Pegg’s involvement seems a given, but co-stars like Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames aren’t as certain, Renner especially whose William Brandt character spent much of the fifth film seemingly sidelined with Alec Baldwin’s character.
A new Twitter exchange between Renner and McQuarrie yesterday suggests he’s likely to return to join the IMF team for a third time. Renner asked McQuarrie: “Hey, is the band getting back together? Should I start stretching?” to which McQuarrie replied: “Wear comfortable pants. You’re gonna need ’em.” Things went further from there, but the point was made.
Production on the next ‘Mission’ looks to be kicking off later this year or early next year.
