Spike TV has given a ten episode straight-to-series order for “Red Mars,” a sci-fi drama series adaptation of Kim Stanley Robinson’s acclaimed novel trilogy.
The series of award-winning science fiction novels – “Red Mars,” “Green Mars,” “Blue Mars” – chronicles the nearly two century long settlement and terraforming of the planet Mars through the personal viewpoints of a wide variety of characters.
The TV version will follow the first settlers charged with terraforming a mysterious planet, all of whom have competed to be a part of the mission. These relative strangers are cut off from everything they’ve ever known and living in the harshest environment imaginable.
J. Michael Straczynski (“Sense8,” “Babylon 5”) will write the series and executive produce with Vince Gerardis (“Game of Thrones”), David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross.
Robinson will consult on the series which will being production next summer for a January 2017 premiere and will mark the network’s first scripted series in nine years not including its “Tut” mini-series earlier this year.
