“Electrick Children” director Rebecca Thomas has joined the list of final contenders for the highly-coveted job of directing Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” says Jeff Sneider.
The project marks the first female-centric Marvel Studios superhero movie and stars Brie Larson in the title role. Thomas’ name joins a list revealed last week that also includes Niki Caro (“Whale Rider,” “North Country”), Lesli Linka Glatter (“Homeland,” “Ray Donovan”) and Lorene Scafaria (“The Meddler,” “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”) .
“The Babadook” helmer Jennifer Kent and “Kung Fu Panda 2” director Jennifer Yuh were also previously said to be in contention but dropped out.
Larson plays Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who gains powers after her DNA becomes fused with an alien after an accident. Nicole Perlman (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Meg LeFauve (“Inside Out”) wrote the script.
Thomas has also been attached to Universal’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” and the John Green adaptation “Looking for Alaska”. A decision won’t be made anytime soon as Marvel is said to be very deliberate in its search. The film has a release date of March 8th 2019.
