“Ready Player One” Nabs $3.8M In Previews

Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” opened with $3.8 million in Wednesday night previews, putting the sci-fi fantasy on track to open at or past its projections of $45-55 million over the four-day Easter holiday period.

Reviews have been fairly strong, though far from stellar, for the title which nabbed a 64/100 on Metacritic and a 79% (7.1/10) on Rotten Tomatoes. The box-office is looking to be Spielberg’s biggest opener since “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” a decade ago, but with a production budget of a costly $155-175 million, it will have to perform strong to make a profit.

The film is also launching day and date internationally in 62 markets with the global opening weekend projections looking to be between $140-170 million.
