With Benicio Del Toro having dropped out of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” sequel this time last week, those in charge have wasted no time in finding a replacement to play the villain.
“Carlos” and “The Bourne Ultimatum” star Ã‰dgar Ramirez has reportedly emerged as the front runner to score the role reports Variety. Jordi Molla (“Colombiana,” “Bad Boys II”) is also said to be in contention and a decision is expected to be made before the weekend.
Whomever gets cast has about a month to prepare as the film is rapidly heading for a January 15th production start date. Ramirez will either have tested of will be testing for the role via Skype by about the time you’re reading this sentence.
According to the latest talk the villain will be Khan Noonien Singh, the character memorably portrayed by Ricardo Montalban in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and the 1982 classic “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”. That however has not been confirmed by Paramount, Bad Robot or anyone else involved.
Also today EW has revealed that Peter Weller’s character will be that of a C.E.O. and is a “substantial role” according to his agent Todd Eisner.
Shooting on the ‘Trek’ sequel is expected to run through until June.
