Ralph Fiennes has been cast in Terry Gilliam’s next feature, an adaptation of Paul Auster’s 1994 absurdist novel “Mr. Vertigo”.
Gilliam, coming off “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” which is finally coming to cinemas later this year, recently announced “Mr. Vertigo” as his next project at the Brussels International Film Festival.
Set in the late 1920s, the action follows Walter Claireborne Rawley – a Saint Louis orphan taught to walk on air by mysterious Hungarian Jew, Master Yehudi. Joining a vaudeville act with two others, they travel through mythic Americana and encounter sinners, thieves, clan members and the mob along the way.
Fiennes was always the director’s first choice, but Gilliam recently revealed the casting received some pushback as Fiennes was described as ‘not bankable’. Fiennes will next be seen as Professor James Moriarty in the Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly-led comedy “Holmes and Watson”.
