Raja Gosnell Helms “The Smurfs” Film

“Scooby Doo” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” director Raja Gosnell is set to direct the live-action/CGI feature film take on classic 80’s animated series “The Smurfs” for Sony Pictures reports the trades.

The blue-skinned dwarflike villagers originated from a Belgian series of comic books (ala “Tintin”) in the late 1950’s, but are most remembered for the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon which ran from 1981-1990.

Story details on the film version aren’t revealed, though the human villain character Gargamel will likely be played by a major star. “Shrek 2” scribes J. David Stern and David N. Weiss along with Audrey Wells penned the screenplay.

A simultaneous 2D and 3D release is already set for December 17th 2010.
