R.I.P. John Heard

Notable character actor John Heard has died at the age of 72. Heard was found dead in a Palo Alto hotel where he was reportedly recovering after undergoing back surgery. The Santa Clara Medical Examiner’s office confirmed his death.

Heard is arguably best known as Peter McCallister, father of Macauley Culkin’s character in 1990’s “Home Alone” and its sequel.

Heard’s first film was 1977’s “Between the Lines” with the actor managing to score at least one if not several roles each year in film and TV right up until his passing this weekend – forty years later.

His notable film roles included key parts in “Big,” “Beaches,” “Gladiator,” “Awakenings,” “After Hours,” “The Pelican Brief,” “Cat People,” “Radio Flyer,” “My Fellow Americans,” “Snake Eyes,” “In the Line of Fire,” “White Chicks,” “C.H.U.D.,” “Cutter’s Way,” “The Seventh Sign ,” “The Guardian,” “The Great Debaters,” “The Trip to Bountiful,” “The Chumscrubber ,” “The Lucky Ones,” “The Milagro Beanfield War,” “Pollock,” “Runner Runner,” “Rambling Rose” and “The Beast”.

On TV he had guest or recurring roles on “Miami Vice,” “The Sopranos,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Entourage,” “Prison Break,” “CSI Miami,” “NCIS Los Angeles,” “Southland,” “Jack & Bobby,” “The Equalizer,” “The Outer Limits,” “Perception,” “The Client,” “Modern Family” and “MacGuyver” along with a fun turn in the first “Sharknado”.

Heard was married to actress Margot Kidder and had a son from a relationship with actress Melissa Leo. He is also survived by a son and a daughter from a later marriage.
