Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger, better known as H.R. Giger, has died at the age of 74. The celebrated Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor, and set designer sustained injuries in a fall and died in hospital yesterday afternoon.
Giger’s designs were said to be influenced by the works of the American horror fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft, and his unique style went on to influence a generation of filmmakers following their utilisation for the title creature in Sir Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi horror masterpiece “Alien”.
He also did designs for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s unproduced “Dune” film along with movies such as “Species,” “Future-Kill,” “Killer Condom” and “Prometheus”.
