HBO Films acquired Rashid Johnson’s “Native Son” in advance of its Sundance Film Festival premiere last night. The project, based on Richard Wright’s novel, was previously going to be released by A24 but will now debut on the premium cable channel at some point in 2019.
The story follows a young African-American man named Bigger Thomas (Ashton Sanders) who takes a job working for powerful Chicago family – a move that has tragic and unforeseen consequences. Pulitzer-Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks adapted the script while Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, KiKi Layne, Elizabeth Marvel, David Alan Grier, and Bill Camp co-star. [Source: THR]
Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ralph Fiennes will star in the Richard Press-directed indie drama “Farnsworth House”. Press will helm from his own screenplay while Gyllenhaal, Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa will produce.
Gyllenhaal will play the practical Dr. Edith Farnsworth and Fiennes will portray the perfectionist Bauhaus architect Mies van der Rohe with the film chronicling their efforts to build the first glass house in the 1940s which led them into a passionate but tempestuous love affair. [Source: Variety]
The Handmaid’s Tale
Christopher Meloni and Elizabeth Reaser have joined the cast of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” taking on guest starring roles as Commander Winslow and his wife. Winslow is dubbed a ‘powerful and magnetic commander who hosts the Waterfords on an important trip’ while Mrs. Winslow becomes an inspiration to Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena Joy. Behind Her Eyes
Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television are set to produce a six-part limited series adaptation of Sarah Pinborough’s bestselling psychological thriller novel “Behind Her Eyes”. Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna will pen the script and filming will take place in the UK later this year.
The story follows Louise, a single mom with a son and a part-time job in a psychiatrist’s office. She begins an affair with her boss and strikes up an unlikely friendship with his wife. A dark, psychological tale of suspense follows, as Louise becomes caught in a dangerous web of secrets. [Source: Deadline]
