You Were Never Really Here
Lynne Ramsay’s adaptation of Jonathan Ames’ novel “You Were Never Really Here” is skipping the award season with Amazon Studios announcing a February 23rd U.S. limited release for the project.
Joaquin Phoenix stars as Joe, a PTSD Gulf War vet/former FBI agent-turned-addled assassin who gets hired to bust a senator’s daughter out of a sex-trafficking ring. The film has received strong (but not stellar) reviews since its debut on the festival circuit. [Source: Indiewire]
Pablo Schreiber (“American Gods”) will play astronaut Jim Lovell in Damien Chazelle’s moon-mission movie “First Man”. Tom Hanks played the role in 1995’s “Apollo 13”.
Lovell is the only person to have flown to the moon twice without making an actual landing. Schreiber will play opposite Ryan Gosling in the Universal movie which opens October 12th next year. [Source: Deadline]
Gary Basaraba (“Suburbicon,” “Mad Men”) has been cast in a key role of Frank ‘Fitz’ Fitzsimmons in Martin Scorsese’s Netflix original feature “The Irishman” which is currently filming in New York. Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel co-star.
Fitzsimmons was the union leader of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and Jimmy Hoffa’s gopher before being chosen to lead the union after Hoffa was convicted of fraud, conspiracy and jury tampering and ended up in prison. [Source: Deadline
French star Romain Duris has been set to lead the nine-episode half-hour dark comedy TV series adaptation of Virginie Despentes’ best-selling novel “Vernon Subutex” for Canal Plus. Cathy Verney will direct and co-write the script with Benjamin Dupas and filming begins next spring.
The titular character is a formerly sought-after bachelor who ran a popular music shop in Paris in his heyday and finds himself down and out on the city streets. His most prized possession is the last filmed recordings of his friend and famous singer benefactor Alex Bleach who just died of a drug overdose. [Source: Variety]
Locke and Key
Newcomer Jack Mulhern has been cast as co-lead Tyler Locke in Hulu’s one-hour horror/fantasy drama series adaptation of Joe Hill’s “Locke and Key” comic. Danny Glover is also boarding the project as the eccentric English teacher Joe Ridgeway who becomes something of a mentor for the kids.
Andy Muschietti (“IT”) helms the pilot which follows three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine with their mother Nina (Frances O’Connor). They find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. There’s also a devious demon also wants the keys and will stop at nothing to attain them. [Source: Deadline]
