The full audio version of Jack White and Alicia Keys duet “Another Way to Die”, the theme song for the upcoming James Bond film “Quantum of Solace”, is online below.
The first listen verdict? The musical element is fine, the brass horns are a welcome return to classic Bond, but the lyrics aren’t so good and the two very different voices don’t gel (Keys should’ve sung solo):
Reviews in the UK are mixed at best, some praising the grungier sound but many saying that oft-rumored Amy Winehouse still should’ve done it.
Bond songs have had a mixed success throughout their time. Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are Forever”, Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does it Better”, Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die”, Duran Duran’s “A View to A Kill”, and John Barry’s instrumental theme for “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” remain the most acclaimed and famous.
Yet recent themes have struggled to keep up. Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name”, Garbage’s “The World is Not Enough” and Tina Turner’s “Goldeneye” scored decent reviews, but Sheryl Crow’s “Tomorrow Never Dies”, Madonna’s “Die Another Day” and Gladys Knight’s “Licence to Kill” were widely panned.
