Jason David Frank, who played Tommy Oliver in the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” series, is one of the few that has not been impressed or entertained by the Joseph Kahn-directed “Power/Rangers” fan film short that went viral earlier this week.
In a posting on Facebook, the actor criticised the short film which reimagined the kid-friendly franchise as a much darker and more serious adult-themed affair. Frank says:
“I know there’s a lot of fans out there that love it and all that stuff, but I’m just a PG-13 guy. The cuss words, the drugs, all this other stuff – it doesn’t fly with me. The problem is that [Power Rangers is] still connected with adult and kids. You can’t take a brand like this and reboot it so dark and gritty.”
Frank said he was approached to appear in the short but declined as he thought it was too harsh for younger viewers. He says he doesn’t regret passing on the short and hopes to appear in the official “Power Rangers” which Lionsgate is developing for a 2016 release.
