Poster, First Reactions: Jeff Nichols’ “Loving”

Focus Features has released the first official poster from the upcoming equality drama “Loving” from filmmaker Jeff Nichols (“Mud,” “Midnight Special,” “Take Shelter”). Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga star in the film which has just had its world premiere In Competition at the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival.

First reviews have proven a mixed bag – the film being praised and scolded for its subtlety and “low-key respectability”. Reviews suggest it’s wonderfully performed and has a welcome matter-of-fact manner, but is undercut by its “dramatic inertness” says The Wrap, while Variety calls it: “too damn polite”.

The story centers on an interracial couple who married in June 1958. They were arrested, thrown into jail, and exiled from the state. For the next nine years, the couple fought for their marriage and the right to return home as a family. Michael Shannon, Nick Kroll, Marton Csokas, Jon Bass and Bill Camp also star in the film which hits U.S. cinemas on November 4th.
