“Poldark,” “Being Human” and “The Hobbit” star Aidan Turner will play Leonardo da Vinci in “Leonardo,” a new English-language TV series by veteran Frank Spotnitz.
Each of the eight episodes of the show will center on one of the Renaissance genius’ masterful achievements in various fields, not only including art. Spotnitz and British writer Steve Thompson co-wrote the script and shooting begins in December and runs through next spring.
Dan Percival (“The Man in the High Castle”) helms the project which aims to air next year in time for the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death.
The project is the first of The Alliance, a co-production group formed by broadcasters like Italy’s RAI, France Televisions and Germany’s ZDF who are coming together to counter streaming giants muscling in on their market.
The company is also working on the Abu Dhabi-set espionage series “Mirage” and the mystery drama “Survivors about an Italian sailboat and its crew who disappear without a trace in the Mediterranean during a storm.
