Pixar’s “Up” To Open Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival has selected Disney and Pixar’s “Up” as both the first animated feature and the first 3D feature to ever open the six-decade strong Cannes Film Festival.

The film, which will screen out of competition, follows a 78-year-old man (Asner) who embarks on a series of adventures after tying thousands of balloons to his house and flying off to South America.

Rival Dreamworks Animation has used Cannes in the past for successful launches of “Kung Fu Panda,” “Over the Hedge,” “Shrek” and “Shrek 2” – none of which scored the prized opening film slot.

“Up” will premiere on May 13th, two weeks ahead of its theatrical release on May 29th.
