Pitt, Miller Take On The Odyssey

Warner Bros. Pictures is planning on turning Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” into a futuristic space epic reports Variety.

Brad Pitt and “Mad Max” helmer George Miller are tied to this new adaptation the property which they hope Pitt will star in and produce while Miller will direct.

Pitt of course starred in 2004’s “Troy” for the studio which was based on both Homer’s “The Iliad” and the early passages of its sequel “The Odyssey”. The hero of the later tale, Odysseus, was played by Sean Bean in said film.

“The Odyssey” follows Odysseus’ decade-long journey from the Trojan War to his homeland of Ithaca in Greece – a long journey due to his enraging of the god Poseidon.

Along the way he encounters various challenges – an angry Cyclops, the sorceress Circe who turns half his men into pigs, the treacherous songs of the Sirens, giant stone-throwing cannibals, the narrow passage between the many-headed monster Scylla and the whirlpool Charybdis, shipwrecks, nymphs and rival suitors for his wife and son.

Over the years the work has been translated onto film and TV many times and has been used as inspiration for features like “O Brother Where Art Thou” and “Apocalypse Now”. Even the ‘sci-fi version’ concept of the story has been done before in a French 1981 anime series entitled “Ulysses 31”.
