“Picnic At Hanging Rock” Becomes A TV Series

A new TV series adaptation of “Picnic At Hanging Rock” is in the works with FremantleMedia Australia producing the six-episode series for Australian cable provider Foxtel.

Joan Lindsay’s 1967 novel, and the famed Peter Weir 1975 film adaptation which starred a young Jacki Weaver and John Jarratt, follows the disappearance of three schoolgirls and their governess on Valentine’s Day in 1900.

Beatrix Christian (“Jindabyne”) and Alice Addison (“The Devil’s Playground”) have signed on to pen the series which Antonia Barnard (“Tracks,” “A Few Best Men”) will produce.

The adaptation follows in the wake of a successful stage production which premiered in Melbourne in February. The plan is for the series to first premiere on Foxtel’s Showcase channel in 2017.
