Amblin Entertainment has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming remake of iconic 1957 Broadway musical “West Side Story”. The photo features original lyricist Stephen Sondheim on set with director-producer Steven Spielberg.
The film explores young love and tensions between rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks on the streets of 1957 New York. Spielberg helms from a script by Oscar-nominated screenwriter and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner.
The original musical was written by Arthur Laurents with music by Leonard Bernstein, had lyrics by Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. Justin Peck will choreograph the musical numbers in the new film which Kevin McCollum and Kristie Macosko Krieger are producing.
Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler lead a cast that includes Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, Rita Moreno, Curtiss Cook, Ariana DeBose, Ezra Menas, Ben Cook, Sean Harrison Jones, Mike Faist, Patrick Higgins, Josh Andres Rivera and more. “West Side Story” will be released on December 18th 2020.
