Phoenix Up for Anderson’s Religious Drama

Joaquin Phoenix is in early talks to join Paul Thomas Anderson’s religious drama formerly titled “The Master” for Annapurna Pictures says Variety.

The story is focus on the relationship between The Master (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952, and the 20-something alcoholic drifter who becomes his right-hand man.

As the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor. Phoenix would play said drifter, a role that Jeremy Renner was previously linked to.

Anderson directs from his own original script and financing is currently being sought.
