The African-American audience targeted erotic thriller “The Perfect Guy” narrowly beat M. Night Shyamalan’s new horror film “The Visit” at the U.S. box-office this weekend.
‘Guy’ took the lead with $26.7 million, more than double its $12 million budget. Sanaa Lathan stars as a successful lobbyist whose new rebound relationship with a handsome man (Michael Ealy) turns out to be a bad decision.
Screen Gems, who produced the film, had a similar result in the same weekend last year with the similar “No Good Deed” which starred Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson.
“The Visit” wasn’t far behind though with a strong $25.7 million. Made on a $5 million budget, its success is something of a needed comeback for Shayamalan after a series of big-budget and high-profile flops.
Both films ended up earning about $10 million more than early estimates for them were suggesting. Things weren’t so fortunate for “90 Minutes in Heaven” which made just $2.2 million and failed to nab the faith-based audience it was seeking – they were all still checking out “War Room” which came in third with $7.4 million.
