Penn’s “Last Face,” Herzog’s “Salt and Fire” Acquired

Saban Films has acquired the North American distribution rights to Sean Penn’s “The Last Face”. Charlize Theron, Javier Bardem, Adele Exarchopoulos, Jean Reno and Jared Harris star in the film which had its world premiere at Cannes in May where reviews were not kind.

Set against the devastating backdrop of war-torn Liberia, the story follows a love affair between Dr. Wren Petersen (Theron), the director of an international aid organization and Dr. Miguel Leon (Bardem), a relief-aid doctor. Together, they must find a way to keep their relationship alive in the extraordinarily difficult conditions that surround them.

Meanwhile filmmaker Werner Herzog’s dark eco-thriller “Salt and Fire” has been picked up for U.S. distribution by Xlrator Media just days before the film’s North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Michael Shannon, Veronica Ferres and Gael Garcia Bernal star in the film about a corporate CEO and a group of scientists who must band together despite their ideological differences to try to avoid a looming environmental catastrophe. The film opens Spring 2017.
