Penelope Cruz has been cast as Donatella Versace, sister of murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace, in FX’s “Versace: American Crime Story” event series.
The project marks the third installment of producer Ryan Murphy’s universally acclaimed, award-winning limited series following last year’s “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” and the upcoming “Katrina”.
The ten episode story explores the July 1997 assassination of legendary designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez). Serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Farren Criss) was behind the death and committed suicide eight days later as Miami Dade police were on the verge of capturing him.
Maureen Orth’s novel “Vulgar Favors” will serve as the basis for the project with Tom Rob Smith (“London Spy”) set to write the first two and multiple subsequent episodes. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson also serve as executive producers on the series which is slated to begin production in April and will air in 2018.
